General Uses of Fixed Oils
Whatever name they go by, fixed oils, carrier oils, or base oils, these oils each have different properties and, in turn, different uses.

Food:
Many fixed oils are used in food, the most popular being soy oil which probably accounts for 50% of the seedoil market. Fixed oils, especially if unrefined, can add an amazing array of distinct flavors to a recipe.

Industry:
Fixed oils are also used in the paint industry and for making biofuel amongst other things. Of note, olive oil has been used as a fuel in oil lamps for over 2000 years although has almost been totally replaced by paraffin oil now.

Aromatherapy Oil Blends:
An aromatherapist will use a carrier oils (fixed oils) to dilute aromatherapy essential oils for application to the body. The properties of each carrier oil come into play here as each oil contains different vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Some will soften and improve the skin and some help treat skin conditions.
A few examples:
Almond – a wonderful skin softener.
Aloe Vera – nourishes and heals.
Avocado – rich in vitamins B1, B2 and A.
Grapeseed – said to tighten and tone the skin.
Rosehip – rich in gamma lineoleic acid and potentially beneficial to burns and wrinkles.
Soyabean – rich in vitamin E.
Wheatgerm – great for scars and skin softening.

Toiletries:
Once again, each individual fixed oil (aka carrier oil, base oil, vegetable oil) has it’s own property that will enhance the product being made. These products range from body lotions to body soaps and make-up. As well as the properties mentioned above in the “Aromatherapy Oil Blends” section it should be noted that different oils create a different feel in lather when it comes to soap making. For example, coconut oil creates big bubbly lather and olive oil makes a creamier lather.
